Music Composition Resources explaining Music Analysis

Analysing a piece requires great knowledge of music theory. As a composer, along with other WKMT members, I decided to create a resource summarising information presented by such experts as William Caping and Arnold Schoenberg. The main goal is to provide materials supporting those starting or struggling with music analysis providing example analysis of Haydn Hob. XVI sonatas.

We supported the resource with our research on William Caplin’s “Classical Forms” providing plenty of theoretical clues and clear information regarding music themes, phrases, ideas, shapes that can be found in works of masters like Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and many other classical composers. For many, after exploring the resource, an analysis will mean investigating musical blocks. Our summaries help the students to use Caplin’s work.

To create an in-depth analysis of the harmonic aspect of a piece, we used Arnold Schoenberg’s “Structural Functions of Harmony”.
