Music Analysis backup material

The only door into proper music analysis lays behind a clear understanding of musical morphology. I’m continuing with my big project consisting of reviewing different pedagogical masterpieces of musical analysis. The one I advocated now is W. Caplin’s “Classical Forms”.

Forging the concept of “hybrid themes” is one of his most important achievements, from my humble perspective. They allow us to classify into a different category a set of themes which were otherwise mixed up amongst with the sentences and periods.

Three out of the four types of hybrid themes showcase the basic idea only once. This characteristic helps this theme to become a great option for modulating themes; this with the sole exception of the “antecedent-cadential” hybrid type.

I strongly recommend the reading of Classical Forms by W. Caplin.
