Analysing Haydn Sonatas – Reviewing Harmony

Harmonic analysis is a fundamental element of music analysis. As part of my Haydn analysis, I’ve decided to produce a short series of articles covering the main tools required to analyse classical sonatas; most specifically Haydn piano sonatas.

The functional harmonic analysis is the most suitable tool to aid the understanding of the classical forms followed in the construction of Haydn Sonatas. Haydn didn’t use a big array of harmonic devices as later composers sis, but he used smartly the harmonies of his colour pallet. I lie to say that Haydn is not the kind of inspiration but the emperor of compositional technique.

Due to the latter, we need to brush our analysing tools very well before attempting to unveil the creative mysteries of this amazing classical maestro.
